February 19th, 2024 - Republic of Moldova joins the Digital Europe Programme, an initiative of the European Union, which comes with numerous benefits for entrepreneurs, local administrations, the associative sector and citizens. Joining the programme means that business environment, mayoralties, NGOs and central institutions across the country will have access to European funds for digitisation, with a total budget of EUR 7.5 billion over the period 2021-2027.

The Association Agreement for the Digital Europe Programme was signed today, February 19th, in Brussels by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Economic Development and Digitalization, Dumitru Alaiba, and European Commissioner Thierry Breton, responsible for the Internal Market.

Thereby, the Republic of Moldova will benefit from financial support and expertise to improve its digital infrastructure and promote innovation and digital inclusion in society.

The main strategic document for the country’s digital transformation is the 2023-2030 Digital Transformation Strategy, in September last year. The document aims to develop an innovative and inclusive digital society with advanced infrastructure, digital governance and a business community that benefits from the opportunities of digitisation. Access to funding through the Digital Europe Programme will support the achievement of these objectives.

Therewith, through the Digital Europe Programme, Moldova will accelerate the digitisation of businesses and public administration. This will support start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the public sector, in their efforts to become more competitive and improve business models through the use of advanced digital technologies.

Programme support is strengthened by granting a 95% reduction in Moldova’s annual financial contributions until its completion in 2027.

The Republic of Moldova will actively participate in future digital opportunities, especially in the four areas to which it has been associated: supercar, artificial intelligence, advanced digital skills, implementation and optimal use of digital technologies and interoperability.

The Association Agreement will enter into force retroactively from January 1st, 2024, once the related ratification processes have been completed. The Digital Europe Programme is a European Union funding programme focused on the uptake of digital technologies by businesses, citizens and public administrations. This programme aims to accelerate economic recovery and shape the digital transformation of European society and economy, benefiting everyone, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.
